When the Memphis Grizzlies hosted the Golden State Warriors on home turf during the Western Conference Semifinal of the 2015 NBA Playoffs, Bandit Lites augmented FedExForum’s arena lighting package with high-energy lighting, including a dozen High End Systems SHAPESHIFTER C1 fixtures. Bandit Lites' Director of Sales and Installations Chris Barbee led the charge to bring C1 fixtures to the party. Recognizing SHAPESHIFTER's unique qualities, Barbee decided to take a closer look at the fixture. He comments, "When I first heard of the fixture, its eye candy qualities made me think of it somewhat as a gimmick. When I viewed it in the HES demo room in Austin, I could see there was a lot more to this fixture. Looking at all the wash light products available, SHAPESHIFTER was the best as far as getting a good amount a light a long distance, and also being able to do beam effects with the arrays. We placed four C1's on each long catwalk along the sides, and two on each end - so we basically wrapped around the court with them. It was a very versatile fixture for what we were trying to accomplish."
LD/programmer Shawn Worlow used the SHAPESHIFTERs to wash the floor with color, fill the arena with beams and bring added excitement to the playoff visuals. Asked about the relevance of SHAPESHIFTER as a new lighting tool, Shawn commented, "I was really surprised at the brightness of the fixture. I had not worked with SHAPESHIFTERs or really even seen them before going into FedExForum to program for the playoffs. I was also very pleased that the light read very well with movement and intensity, even while the full sports lights were up for game time. When we would do crowd pumpers for timeouts and stoppages in play, the C1's were able to add movement across the entire arena bowl to give constant coverage while the other fixtures did a large ballyhoo across the crowd." The C1's were placed for maximum coverage in the arena. Shawn explains, "We hung the fixtures yoked out off the catwalk so they were very high - as the grid in the arena is in the 105' tall range. This height allowed me to cover a very large area with the Shifters. I was originally a little nervous about them reading well at the distances we were facing, but they came through with shining colors and were far brighter than I anticipated. "I had a short window of just a few hours to program the team intro, crowd pumpers and half time performances plus dance segments for the Grizz Girls and team mascot Grizz. I built a few cue stacks for the different segments so the operator could move between cues and scenes quickly. I used the different macros in the SHAPESHIFTERs in almost every cue as they really sped up the programming. I didn't have time to build intricate effects from scratch and the macros did just the trick - to look awesome but also allow for fast programming. My hats off to the Memphis Grizzlies and FedExForum production team of Brandon Fiedler and Jason Potter for the vision they had and helping to pull off a great fan experience for the series with the Golden State Warriors."
